Dear members of Black-Faced Spoonbill Conservation Association and all lovers of BFS,
I saw from your website, http://mail.tnssh.tn.edu.tw/~bfsa/, T37 went to Chigu, Tainan on 14th October. I am happy T37 flew to Taiwan safely. And I am delighted to tell you the story of T37 in this summer of Korea.
T37 was found at first on Suribong islet on 27th April. It was making the nest just like other 23 spoonbills. But when I visited the islet again after one month (25th May), the nest was empty and T37 was gone. Herring Gull (mongolicus subspecies assumed) made a nest nearby. Herring Gulls sometimes steal the eggs. But I don’t know the reason of the failure.
When I visited on Gaksiam locating on southern Ganghwado at 6th June, I found again T37 was roosting. The islet is apart 25km in a straight line. But T37 did not make a nest. The islet is so small without any nest materials just like grass. At that time, app. 6 nests were already built by other birds, so there was no suitable site for nesting.
I found again T37 with a pair at 14th July, from Yudo island locating on Hangang river estuary. Yudo is apart 22km from Gaksiam in a straight to north. I assume T37 already has made a nest on the tree on 3 weeks ago. Because a bird was incubating eggs on the same site visited at 23rd June. At that time, many other pairs were trying to make nests. But most of them failed to breed after 3 weeks, and T37 also failed to breed. It was disappeared after 2 weeks. I think Great Eagle Owls are the predator of the islet.
T37 was again found roosting on Yeochari pond at 5th, 6th, and 29th September. It is a favorable roosting site of BFSpoonbills locating on southern Ganghwado islands. T37 was also found again on Gaksiam on 9th and 28th September. Gaksiam is a main roosting site of BFS after the breeding season. And the main feeding area of BFS is the south mudflat of Ganghwado.
T37 was last seen from Yeochari at 8th October, and then you found it from Chigu after 6 days.
It seems T37 directly flew to your wintering place, Chigu ! How wonderful and friendly story !
I first saw T37 on 28th Nov. 2005 from Chigu after the BFS Symposium of Waterbird Meeting, Tainan. I appreciate all of your kindness at that time. And I hope to visit your country again on this winter. Unfortunately, T37 failed to breed twice on this summer, so I hope you encourage T37 by heart.
